It happens overnight. And, unfortunately, there’s no telling exactly when the first frost will put a brisk end to the lush gardens you’ve been lovingly tending to over the fleeting warmer months. You can’t stop it from appearing, but you can prepare your plants for the inevitable freezing season — right up until the bitter (cold) end of fall. “Personally, I like to work outside on the garden right until the first snowfall,” says Chad Labbe, owner and chief operating officer of Shelmerdine Garden Centre in Headingley.
