JOHNSTON GROUP EMPLOYEE BENEFITS

BENEFITS OF THE ENVIRONMENT

JOHNSTON GROUP EDITORIAL CHAMBER ?

Small steps to building healthier environments for business

Businesses and communities are made up of people – not statistics, not actuarial tables, but real people. And if you want a business to be sustainable, it’s people who are going to make that happen. Johnston Group administers employee benefit plans and we are fortunate enough that this puts us in a position to give back to the community, so we do. We believe we can serve in many ways—obviously through philanthropy and volunteering, but also with vision. As a part of that, we try to lead by example. We believe our work can, in some small way, empower and inspire businesses and individuals so communities can thrive. Community sustainability certainly involves attention to the environment, and what’s good

and did the same for Water First (waterfirst. ngo), to provide clean water and build healthy communities. Johnston Group also planted one tree on behalf of each employee this year as part of The Canopy Project (earthday.org/campaign/ the-canopy-project), which promotes planting trees across the globe to improve our shared environment and strengthen communities. Over the past three years, JG has planted 1,525 trees with Manitoba Forestry and with The Canopy Project. These environmental actions don’t generally make it into social media posts and that’s not what this is about. These are small ways organizations can have a positive impact on the environment and on their communities. Our employees met on a Saturday to go out and pick up trash in the neighbourhood. It makes the area look nice, it’s a great team-building event, and it makes people’s lives a little better. ■ Learn more about Johnston Group’s focus on community and business wellness. www.johnstongroup.ca

for the environment is good for business. Johnston Group has been actively seeking ways to reduce our environmental footprint, and thanks to a grassroots team in our organization, we’re taking meaningful steps toward our eco- friendly future. The obvious first step was to reduce our paper use and maximize our recycling. The COVID pandemic took care of a lot of the paper, as we were compelled to speed up our plans to eliminate paper use for more of an immediate form of communication and to accommodate our employees working from home. Recently, we have added a recycling initiative that removes used office supplies from the garbage cans to be recycled by TerraCycle (terracycle.com). We began working with Compost Winnipeg (compostwinnipeg.ca) to provide a composting option within the office, diverting food waste from landfills and reducing methane emissions. We recently expanded this project to include a larger receptacle and encouraging employees to bring their compostables from home. This year, to celebrate Earth Day, Johnston Group made several donations. The company donated one dollar for each JG employee, to Ground Up Foundation (ground-up-foundation.com),
