RESTAURANT DAY TRIPS

While you’re out and about, here are three restaurants that combine small- town appeal with a big commitment to good food and friendly service. SPICY RADISH CAFÉ Spicy Radish Café (www.spicyrad- ish.ca) is at 141 Railway Ave. in Whitemouth, a 90-minute drive east from Winnipeg. “Our menu is small-town, home- style diner with a fresh twist,” says Red Seal Chef Shannon Stebelko- Devloo. “It’s all the familiarity of your small-town restaurant with food prepared from scratch by a chef with an eye to some lighter options.” That translates to modern home- cooked food like really good mashed potatoes, burgers and fries, pan-fried pickerel and much more in a licensed café-style setting. “We embrace seasonality and access as many local ingredients as we can,” she says. “People come for our great food,

but it’s also paired with warm, welcoming hospitality that leaves you feeling satisfied.” Stebelko-Devloo says the plan for the summer is to also provide pre-made meals along with their dine-in and takeout options. They also feature a freezer stocked with homemade fresh soups, and they’re planning salad kits and other goodies. “We are en route to the Whiteshell and people really enjoy being able to pick up fresh homemade meal kits to take to the next destination.” The restaurant has a patio, and ample street parking is available. Takeout is truly a treat, Stebelko-Devloo adds. “If we are full, we encourage people to take our takeout to the river park that’s just a 10-minute walk or a two-minute drive away.” BRENNIVINS PIZZA HÜS Boasting a promise to never close early, Brennivins Pizza Hüs, a popular tradition in Gimli since 1999, has been serving up great food in a family-friendly atmosphere that gets cosier with individually lit tables as the sun goes down. “Our regulars come back for fresh, consis- tent food, great service and great ambience,” says Dave Strachan, owner and manager. Located 90 minutes north of Winnipeg at 70 1st Ave. in Gimli, Brennivins Pizza Hüs (https://brennivinspizza.ca/) is a full- service licensed family restaurant. They offer dine-in, delivery and takeout, which means you can grab-and-go over to a picnic

table on Gimli’s beautiful beach and catch some sun. “Our specialty is pizza and we’ve got ribs, salads, pasta and a great appetizer menu, which includes poutine and mozzarella sticks,” says Strachan, who is also in the process of tweaking a few new menu items for the summer season. “We’re very well known for chicken wings, and our four-cheese spinach dip is extremely popular.” If you want to let your day trip drift into the evening, the 10-table restaurant is open until 11 p.m. no matter what. Street parking is available and a free public lot is nearby. Gimli offers easily accessible amenities such as public washrooms and change rooms.
