SYL'S DRIVE INN Family-run and family-welcoming, Syl’s Drive Inn (sylsdriveinn.ca) at 132 4 Ave. SE in Carman, an hour southwest of Winnipeg, offers yummy food and a ton of onsite fun. Founded by Quentin Sylvester in 1960, Travis and Stacie Enns took over the restaurant in 2009. “Our menu is the classic drive-in burgers and fries, and we also do deep-fried chicken fingers and nuggets, and breaded shrimp,” says Travis Enns. “We’re also known for our soft ice cream
and we offer 20 flavours of hard ice cream.” The restaurant, with original retro-appeal, is situated on 2.5 acres with 25 picnic tables, a screened gazebo, a play area for kids, a grassed area for picnic blankets and plenty of onsite and overflow parking. They’re open mid-March to mid-October with a spanking new, professionally designed mini-golf course. “Some of our events will be Star Wars days, Disney days, and we want to do Christmas in July and decorate the course with Christmas lights, have a visit from Santa and lots of giveaways,” says Enns,
adding that all the info will be posted on their website and on Instagram. But even with all the fun, the thing that brings people back is the food. “Everything is cooked fresh. Nothing is pre-cooked,” he says. “And we try to have everything out on that seven- or eight- minute mark, so it’s pretty fast — and really friendly.” During the long, lazy days of summer, these dining destinations — and many other mouth-watering Manitoba eateries — are well worth the drive. ■
You can help sick and injured kids across Manitoba today. Kids like Janessa , who spent months at HSC Winnipeg Children’s Hospital away from her community of Pukatawagan. And eight-year-old Pacey , from Winkler, who has had 30 surgeries and counting. And Caleigh , from Rivers, who had brain surgery at only nine months old. And Gianna , from Winnipeg, who was the size of a cell phone and blind when she was born prematurely. You can ensure the 130,000 kids across Manitoba, Northwestern Ontario, and Nunavut who use the province’s only specialized hospital for kids continue to get the best care possible. Your donations support the latest medical equipment, innovative programming and life-changing research that change the future for sick and injured kids and their families. Thanks to you, Janessa (and her new kidney, Bob) can enjoy fishing and the outdoors. Pacey can swim and play with his sisters. Caleigh can sing her ABCs. Gianna can see.
