The anniversary donations came in addition to the $3.5 million Wawanesa Insurance committed to its community partners in 2021 and $3.7 million in 2022, as well as its community days — which give employees a paid day off work to volunteer their time. For the company and its employees, these community connections continue to be one of many points of pride amid all the evolutions. “We never lose sight of our roots, but we are recognized today as a digital leader, which ultimately improves the standard of service we can deliver to our custom- ers and brokers. The creation of our Life Insurance Company in the 1960s was a pivotal moment for us; so too was our ex- pansion into the California market in the 1970s,” Haigh says. “More recently, our acquisition of West- ern Financial Group in 2017 helped to further diversify our operations — reaf- firming our commitment to selling our product through insurance brokers in Canada and strengthening our company overall. Part of that support is evolving to meet the needs of the communities Wawanesa Insurance serves.” In the early days, that meant insurance for the wooden threshers used by Wawa- nesa farmers or a fire truck purchased to protect the community (many members of the volunteer fire brigade were also company employees back in the ’50s and ’60s). “We’ve grown a lot over the last decade, from 20 farmers to two million customers."
