CHARTERED PROFESSIONAL ACCOUNTANTS
These courses are precursors to joining our professional program,” she says. “Registration is open now and closes Jan. 5, 2024.” Information on this and other aspects of the program is available at CPAmb.ca or by contacting info@cpamb.ca. Tucker says there is also increased recognition of the value of mentorship, particularly for Indigenous learners. “We discovered that we need to get better at teaching people how to be mentors and to understand what makes a good mentorship conversation — much like training a coach to be a coach,” she says. She says it would be ideal to pair high school students with mentors who could stay with them through their studies to help them keep on track beyond their commerce degrees. An area of change highlighted by the pandemic is heightened concern around mental health issues and how learning strategies have evolved. “For the future, we are looking at how we assess our CPA candidates
to maintain the high standards and rigour of the program while adapting to contemporary learning styles and ensuring we’re doing it effectively to graduate the number of accountants that our economy needs.” Tucker says that once students become CPAs, they will have a dynamic career ahead of them. In fact, the expanding role of the chartered professional accountant is becoming increasingly adaptive to change so even experienced, established professionals are going to have opportunities to step up. “Don’t take that responsibility for granted — you do need to expand your horizons. Be a continuous learner, take your place in the world and influence organizational decisions in a positive way,” Tucker says. “The thing that gets me up in the morning is to be able to hold a mirror up to our profession and say ‘Look at all of the possibilities and potential that you as a financial professional can have in the world.’” ■
“The recruitment partnership is a way of demonstrating through Economic Development Winnipeg that coming to Canada is fruitful to an internationally trained professional’s career and that we have created a clear pathway — with support for a good landing — to come here from certain countries."
