builder in Manitoba, Steve and Cathie Maric have since passed the torch to their children, who have expanded on their vision. Maric Homes is more than a business; it’s a family affair. “My dad Steve is Croatian, immi- grated here in 1967 from what was at the time called Yugoslavia. He met and married my mom Cathie in Winnipeg. He was a cabinet-maker by trade who started framing houses on his own to sell one at a time,” says Peri Maric, co-owner and vice-president of design at Maric Homes. The Marics raised their children in a house they built for themselves in East St. Paul. “My dad was doing cabinet installs and mom had joined the company right around then. She took on everything — accountant, interior

designer, office manager, every- thing,” Maric says. The Marics were not large-scale production builders. “The building landscape was a little bit different. They were building lots of slightly more modest houses in The Maples and some in north Winnipeg,” he says. “And then when the Manitoba

Home Builders’ Association started the Parade of Homes, it created a great platform for builders to show their stuff.” Here was the opportunity to take the company to the next step. “I think it was a house in La Salle — they built this gigantic, beautiful, spectacular bungalow of a kind that had really never been seen before in Winnipeg,” Maric says.
