MHBA Committee

MHBA focuses on professional development, safety and innovation

BY JANINE LEGAL

The Manitoba Home Builders’ Association’s (MBHA’s) newest committee has been hard at work since coming together last fall. The Professional Development, Safety and Innovation Committee merges the work of the former Workplace, Safety and Health Committee and the Education and Training Committee into one new group. The work that MHBA is doing for professional development and training through the Professional Home Builders Institute (PHBI) is expansive.

Greg McDonald is chair of the new committee. The Randall Homes project manager is a carpenter by trade who got into the construction business 28 years ago. “We thought it would be more beneficial if we combined the two different committees. There was lots of overlap,” he says of the new 16-person group, which includes builders and suppliers, as well as a represen- tative from Efficiency Manitoba. “When building numerous projects with different people, different personalities — there’s lots on the go — it’s always

challenging and fun.” McDonald says they are there to identify, develop and imple- ment training needs. They aim to find ways to make sure builders and MHBA members are up to date and up to speed with safety requirements and the various the building processes. The committee partners up with different groups — including the Manitoba Construction Sector Council, PHBI, Red River College Polytechnic and Manitoba Institute of Trades and Technology, among others — in their work on building process training and safety.

The interesting thing about this committee is that we are bringing together different people who usually compete against each other. Our goal is to make sure we develop best practices and train everybody as much as we can." “
