In 2022, the federal government of Canada released the 2020 national model codes — a new set of standards for construction encompassing building, plumbing, fire and energy codes. The national model codes outline a tiered process for energy efficiency, also referred to as a step code. Manitoba adopted Tier 1 of the step code in 2024, meaning that buildings designed and constructed must comply with the new requirements moving forward. Efficiency Manitoba is a Crown corporation dedicated to offering cost-effective programs and services to Manitobans in order to reach the province’s long-term energy savings targets. Under the purview of the minister of the Environment and Climate Change, Efficiency Manitoba’s mandate is to develop and support energy-efficiency initiatives that will reduce provincial electricity consumption by 1.5 per cent and natural gas by 0.75 per cent annually.
