HVAC Tips

HOME’S HVAC SYSTEM AN IMPORTANT CONSIDERATION BY JIM TIMLICK Most people spend countless hours considering countertops, lighting, kitchen cupboards and other features when they are planning for their new custom-built home.

T he same can hardly be said for that same home’s heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) system. In fact, many people hardly give it a second thought and that can be a potentially risk gambit, warns the general manager of a Winnipeg HVAC company. “What I tell people is your heating system, your ventilation system, these are the heart and lungs of your home,” says Tara Smith of Mr. Furnace/Furnasman New Homes. “If you put the wrong system in or a system that can’t keep up, then you’re going to be uncomfortable in your home all the time. Why would you want to spend all this money building a new home and

getting all the beautiful new cabi- netry and the wonderful coun- tertops and fancy taps but you’re never warm and you always have to wear a new sweater because you didn’t make sure that the heat system could completely handle the home?” Smith says it’s a good idea for new homebuyers to consider how they plan to utilize their house and discuss those plans with their builder to ensure the right HVAC system is being installed in their home. Smith recommends one of the first things families do when they move into their new home is to make a checklist of the compo- nents of their HVAC system and determine what kind of

maintenance they require. They can then set a regular mainte- nance schedule that will help increase the longevity of the system and decrease the chances of equipment breakdown. “Staying on top of the mainte- nance of all your equipment is extremely important,” she says. At the top of that list is checking your furnace’s filter. Many one-inch filters need to be changed monthly, although some can last three months or more. Smith says the best way to determine how often the filter needs to be changed is contact the company that installed the furnace or find the model number on the filter and do an online search for details on it.
