Let’s Hit the Deck — Cont’d from page 107

“The biggest reason to buy this product is it eliminates scraping, painting and staining,” Dueck says. “It’s very, very durable, extra cut- resistant, and carries a 10-year waterproof war- ranty, although I’ve known Duradek to last 20 to 25 years.” If you love the idea of a low-maintenance deck but still want it to look like wood, Dueck suggests

the popular Wolf line of PVC decking, which comes in six different colours, and with a 25- year warranty. “Wolf Decking is sev- eral steps above com- posite decking, and it’s perfect for people who still want the look of a traditional deck,” Dueck says. “We can sell it to do-it-yourselfers or do a full-design build. We cannot keep this prod- uct in stock.” Once you have the

deck of your dreams in place, Barkman has plenty of kits, from pizza ovens to complete bar- becue sets and fireplaces, to help homeowners create outdoor kitchens and lounge areas. “Our fireplace kits are the most popular by far — our compact fireplace is nicer for smaller lots,” Wiebe says. The compact model measures 78 inches (198 centimetres) high by 44 inches (111 centimetres) wide and 40 inches deep, but there’s a size to suit every yard. The kits are an affordable option, and Wiebe says most only take two or three hours to put together, so you’ll still have plenty of time to devote to fun in the sun.

Windeck Ltd. carries more traditional low-maintenance materials, including Duradek, a waterproof, vinyl roof-deck membrane that’s available in a variety of colours and patterns. “It can be used as a second-floor walkout deck, which gives you dry space be- low,” says Windeck president and owner Mel Dueck. “It’s very modern looking — it resembles something closer to a funky kitchen floor. We have it available in everything from a stone-chip pattern to a swirly pattern. It’s just very cool.” Duradek requires professional installation, but once it’s in place all you need to do to keep it looking sharp is hose it down once in a while.
