Heart of the Home Hot trends in designer kitchens

>> With trends toward mixed textures, sleek finishes on cabinet doors and light colour schemes, kitchens will be “white hot” in 2016. At Urban Effects by Norcraft Cabinetry, sales manager Gino Vadacchino is seeing a move toward pale palettes grounded with stronger textures. “With cabinets, we’re looking at finishes that are lighter, like the off-whites, and the grey palette is still quite popular right now,” he says. “And in contrast with the colour will be some form of texture on a wall tile for a backsplash or maybe a reclaimed-wood top as an accent to bring some warmth to the room.”

Marrying contrasting materials like metal and glass on cabinet doors is another ongoing trend that provides extra interest. “The clean lines and unclut- tered look of contemporary styling is still a strong theme in the local market which in- cludes flat door styles with very little detail and the Shak- er-style door, a nice simple door that people like,” Vadac- chino says. Client wish lists are including

built-in appliances like deluxe gas cooktops and ovens and specialty items like wine chillers. Walk-in pantries and walk- through pantries are also popular as storage and staging areas. “Depending on the size of the home, they almost look like but- ler’s pantries where there are cabinets all built in within those areas,”Vadacchino says. Drawers for pots and pans are among the goodies in well-ap- pointed chef-style kitchens. Pesky corner cabinets now have hardware that makes it easy to pull shelves right out of the cup- board. Soft close-drawers and cabinets keep the kitchen nice and quiet and floating shelves give a feeling of airiness while providing storage for dishes or decorative items. “When it gets down to the organizational accessories inside the cabinets, they want them to look as beautiful as the exte- rior of the cabinets,” says Vadacchino. There is a tendency to go to richer finishes than in the past, with the use of sturdy but beautiful chrome in all the acces- sories. And no kitchen is complete without an island, preferably one with a granite or quartz countertop and plenty of space for family members to “perch up” with their computers or iPads.
