On November 19 at 3 p.m., the Manitoba Hydro Santa Claus Parade returns to downtown Winnipeg to delight children young and old. After a two-year parade hiatus due to COVID-19, the jolly elf and all his friends will travel down Portage Avenue bringing an abundance of good cheer back to the streets. The parade begins at Portage and Main, heads west on Portage Avenue, turns south on Memorial, and ends at York Avenue. With an earlier start, the parade is sure to be a hit with young and old. “Manitoba Hydro is always delighted to be involved in this signature event,” said Manitoba Hydro representative Gary Shingleton. “This year we’re partnering with the Christmas Cheer Board and hosting Santa’s Workshop at Manitoba Hydro Place before the parade. More than 100 Kris Kringle rides again in the Manitoba Hydro Santa Claus Parade
young guests from various inner city area community organizations will join us for a holiday experience like no other, and then they’ll head out to watch the parade from specially designated VIP seating.” In addition to Santa’s Workshop, Manitoba Hydro is also once again hosting a block party. “The block party is a favourite with so many,” said Gary. “It’s a friendly event with parade attendees from the same block getting together to play games and be entertained about an hour before the parade starts and while they wait for Santa to arrive.” Christmas Cheer Board Executive Director Shawna Bell echoes the festive sentiment surrounding the unrivalled joy of the day. “The spirit of the season really shines during the Manitoba Hydro Santa Claus Parade, and we couldn’t be more pleased to partner with Manitoba Hydro during this high energy event. “This year we’re asking all attending the parade to bring new, unwrapped toys and non-perishable food. Manitoba Hydro employees walking alongside the Manitoba Hydro Employee float will gladly collect your generous donations, ensuring the magic of
one day lasts until the big day.” Christmas Cheer Board donations can also be dropped off at Manitoba Hydro Place, 360 Portage Avenue between 1:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m., November 19.

Although it goes without say- ing…I’m going to say it! We are so happy to be back after a long three-year hiatus for the parade. The joy and magic this event brings to our city has been missed and we know you are as eager as we are to see it bring downtown to life and launch the holiday sea- son once again. There are a few new things to watch for this year including a new route direction and start time (see details on pages four and five). Many things are staying the same as you remember. The block parties will start an hour before
the parade and feature returning favourites like Sport Manitoba with their Fit Kids Healthy Kids program, Manitoba Advocate and Manitoba Hydro. We have some great family activities available to be printed from our website; word searches, colouring pages and scavenger hunts await. We want to remind you to carpool or bus downtown, if possible, as street closures impact traffic flow. Make sure to leave early and dress for the weather to ensure you don’t miss a minute of the fun. And of course, as always, the star of the show will be the eagerly
awaited punctuation mark at the end of the procession. Santa Claus will be on his bright and shiny sleigh, waving at all the kids, young and old. We look forward to seeing you downtown again on Saturday, November 19th!

Here’s what you should know to come prepared and ready to see Santa. PLAN YOUR PARADE EXPERIENCE • The parade starts at 3:00pm at Portage Avenue and Main Street and ends at Memorial Boulevard and York Avenue at approximately 4:15pm. • Check the website for details on the block parties and choose which one you want to attend. Arrive at 2:00pm to participate. • There are portable toilets available; check the map on the website for the ones closest to where you plan to be. ACCESSIBILITY • Areas in front of barricades and at the bottom of bleach- ers are reserved for handicap and wheelchair seating. This also includes people with limited mobility like pregnant women, elderly and injured. STAY COMFORTABLE • Bring a thermos of hot chocolate to keep you warm and snacks to keep you happy. • Dress warmly and bring a blanket to wrap around you. • Bring a lawn chair, or a pillow/cushion to sit on if you plan to sit on the curb – the concrete is cold! Remember to be kind to those around you and make room for anyone who has special requirements. GETTING THERE AND BACK HOME • Walk, bike, bus or carpool if you can. Over 40,000 people will be coming downtown and there is limited parking. • If you are driving, plan to leave home with plenty of time. So many streets are closed to prepare for the parade, it will take longer than usual to get there and find a parking spot. It may also be a bit of a walk to where you end up sitting. • On your way home, be patient. Remember that everyone else also wants to get home as soon as possible. ABOVE ALL, HAVE FUN! • Happy smiles and laughs from children of all ages fuel Santa’s sleigh and are the reason the Manitoba Hydro Santa Parade is 111 years old this year. • Show everyone your smile on Facebook and Instagram. Use #wpgsantaparade to make sure Santa sees them too!
