Over the past few years, we’ve become accustomed to hybrid living and work spaces, and younger homeowners are likely to take that trend a step further, by creating hybrid bath and laundry rooms. Not in the primary en suite though — that space is expected to grow and come to resemble a luxury hotel room. Stand-alone bathtubs are on the way out, and huge walk-in showers are in. If they come equipped with remote temperature controls, music and multiple showerheads all the better — but include some water conservation tech, too, please. During the Parade, look for low- or no- threshold showers, large-format tiles, floating vanities and lots of bathroom storage in many show homes. And expect to see more natural materials — wood, glass and stone — and natural light from large energy-efficient windows. The NKBA is also pointing to a greater focus on outdoor spaces for cooking and entertaining, and on paint colours that bring elements of the outdoors indoors. That means more green and wood tones, along with blue and dramatic black. Designers predict that white is going to be on the wane among younger homeowners, but don’t count out grey — it is not going away.
