“People have responded really well to it being unique, but still something they could live with for a longer period of time. It’s not a polarizing detail. A lot of people like the warmth that’s coming out of the metal,” Arlt says. There’s plenty of space for entertaining in the kitchen and adjacent dining area, which opens on to a raised backyard deck. But the house was planned to provide a quiet zone. “People have really liked the layout of the house because it’s got the common spaces like the great room and dining room and the kitchen on one side of the house and the bedrooms are on the other side, so there’s a nice division between the two areas,” Arlt

says. “It would be great if you have smaller kids; you could easily put them to sleep on one side of the house, but you could still continue living on the other side, so people have liked that definitely. “They’ve also liked the fact that we did a totally separate laundry room that’s not part of the mudroom, which just keeps things cleaner and separate and there’s a door you can close.” The lower level can be developed over time to adapt to changing needs, he adds.
