Over at Hearth Homes, design and marketing manager Liam Milne incorporated built-in banquette seating in the Munnion Road show home in RidgeWood West, along with a feature that Milne says settles the debate over microwave placement once and for all. Over-the-range microwave ovens are too high for younger kids to use safely, and under-the- counter microwaves are too low for adult comfort, so Hearth has adopted a Goldilocks solution to make the height just right — about 42 inches off the floor and flush with surrounding cabinetry.
Milne is not a fan of open shelves in kitchens — “I have yet to meet a person organized and disciplined enough to look after them,” he says. But he did embrace the bold colour trend for the Hearth show home on Fetterly Way in Taylor Farm. A gunmetal-blue island with a second tier on the side looks like a beautiful piece of custom furniture and provides subtle separation, along with functionality. “It gives you a little bit of an end point to your kitchen and a start to your dining area, and it also gives you a perfect space to store all your dining room dishes and napkins and linens.”
