COUNTRY CHARMS — Cont’d from page 11
“Kids can play hockey on the street and it feels safe,” says Faucher, who is the RM’s economic development officer. The area has seen robust growth over the past six years, thanks largely to two residential developments — Tourond Creek in St. Adolphe and Grande Pointe Meadows at Grande Pointe. St. Adolphe Coun. Ron Mamchuk says the RM is attractive to young families who like the small-town atmosphere and appreciate its close proximity to Winnipeg’s amenities. “It’s so close to the city. About 85% of the people work in the city or the surrounding area,” Mamchuk says, adding it’s only a 15-minute drive from St. Adolphe to St. Vital Centre. Grande Pointe is even closer, about seven minutes from Winnipeg to the north, or seven minutes from Ile des Chenes to the south. Mamchuk, who was among the volunteers who helped build the St. Adolphe Arena in the 1970s, says he was impressed to see the community spirit at play when the town was one of four finalists in the Kraft Hockeyville competition last year. It didn’t take top spot, but it did earn $25,000 for arena upgrades, plus $10,000 for minor- league hockey equipment.
