STRIKE UP THE BANDWIDTH — Cont’d from page 116
“My lot at my house is 135 feet long … so I wanted to make sure I had wi-fi over the whole thing. I have a park across the street. I wanted wi-fi in the park. So it’s just designing to fit people’s needs. It’s asking the right questions to meet all those needs.” And if you’re not renovating or building new and your home network is weak? Estabrook recommends checking with Inspire’s partner, Shaw, to make sure your package and equipment are up to date. Don’t bother with plug-in “wireless range extenders” from electronics stores. “They’re a minimal Band-Aid solution.” Call an expert, he says, and “we’ll run wires.” He acknowledges the expense. Networking a single-family residence could cost $900 plus labour. “An average two- storey house is between $1,200 and $1,700 … but it’s basic infrastructure.” However, Estabrook offers this tip for free. “A lot of people don’t know that microwaves create a lot of interference for wi-fi. I literally have seen where somebody was having intermittent problems and they had set up a little side table in their kitchen so whenever somebody was using the microwave it was completely dropping their connection.” POH
