Downtown
‘We bought it for the brick and for the wood. We saw it, we loved it’
“I actually think the more 24-hour use you can get, the better for a neighbourhood. So whether it’s people walking to work, out for a jog, going for groceries, walking for dinner, going to a show – that definitely helps.” Mr. Timmerman says streetscape improvements are also in the works. A unique lighting scheme planned for the Market Av- enue and Rory Street area will be sound-activated, so pedestri- ans can just whistle to brighten up the night. The city’s first dis- trict-wide recycling program will soon see Recycle Everywhere bins on every block and they’ll be emptied every day. Mr. Timmerman says an initiative spearheaded by the city and CentreVenture Development Corp. will see Albert Street trans- Condo Attitude Cont’d from page 91
formed into a pedestrian corridor on a trial basis this summer. The street is closed during the Winnipeg Fringe Theatre Festival in July, but a longer closure would allow restaurants to open patios. And CentreVenture is working on attracting a grocer to the Exchange. Mr. Timmerman says the store would be something along the lines of a De Luca’s Specialty Foods store rather than a supermarket. More than 200 seasonal bike parking stations have been added over the past two years and another 30 are in the pipeline. And the city plans to build a 450-stall parkade on James Avenue at Lily Street, possibly with office or retail space on the main floor.
