Quartz can withstand about 90 C while natural stone can handle up to 750 C. (Presumably, if you’re taking full advantage of this feature, you like your food well-done.) “It’s easy to maintain. Anything you spill, you just wipe it up. They’re both very stain, chip- and scratch-resistant,” Charles says. From the time it receives an order, Granite Mountain can have an entire kitchen measured within three days and installation can be completed a couple of days after that. In-house installation services are relatively new to the company. It was less than two years ago that Charles thought his employees would no longer be doing any stone work at all. The company’s previous owner, U.S.-based Coldspring Granite, announced in 2016 that it was shutting down its only Canadian plant. Charles, however, led an employee buyout and kept the company up and running. He’s introduced new quality control measures, and the company is expanding its product line, which already includes Caesarstone, Cambria and other premium quartz products. If you’d like to see Granite Mountain’s work up close, walk around the public areas at True North Square or check out the granite recladding at McPhillips Street Station. They’re just a few of the high-profile commercial projects the company has undertaken. POH
