SEEING GREEN — Cont’d from page 107
“Plants emit a peaceful and calming effect. They have been known to increase productivity and concentration, so they are perfect for the office.” Perhaps this is one reason tropical plants are gaining in popularity. After a hiatus, they’re back in a big way on Instagram and Pinterest, where they grab the attention of younger demographics. They also appeal to mature gardeners who might not be able to care for large outdoor gardens but who still enjoy bringing nature into their home. “The tropical trend is climbing as home decor and fabrics are showing a strong influence with green colours and patterns of tropical foliage,” Hrycyna says. “Leafy plants such as Boston ferns, fiddle-leaf fig trees, sanseveria (snake plants), large split-leaf philodendrons and bright Dracaena limelight add drama to a room, along with patterned leaves like those found on maranta.”
“They not only make our homes more attractive, they cleanse the air in our home by reducing impurities, and they add humidity to the home. Houseplants are especially beneficial to our health during the fall and winter months,” Hrycyna says.
