THE TOP FLOORS — Cont’d from page 119
New waterproof laminates are a good choice for bathrooms and kitchens. And carpets today are also designed to be more durable so that they can better resist spills and stains. In many cases, flooring designers are opting for neutral looks in medium earth tones that will complement a wide range of decor styles. Instead of adding more colour, Curtis says carpet manufacturers are using texture to create visual interest. A pattern will be created in a single-tone carpet by varying the height of the pile to produce a subtle design. Popular wood products include engineered hardwood, which is made with multiple layers of material such as plywood and topped with a hardwood surface to resemble solid hardwood. Engineered flooring can be more forgiving than hardwood in tolerating variations in humidity, which is a plus in Manitoba. However, Derrett says even solid hardwood has become more user-friendly, with a more durable finish.
