Derrett has her eye on several emerging design trends.
One is the return of narrow planks in hardwood flooring, including some as thin as the two-inch strips that were standard decades ago. “The fashion was wider, wider, but now I’m seeing it come back to four inches or less,” she says, adding designers might change up the look by arranging the strips in a herringbone pattern. Another emerging trend is terrazzo — a kind of tile created by combining different materials such as marble, quartz and glass and setting it in resin or concrete. Popular in the 1960s, terrazzo is coming back, in part because of growing interest in recycling. “It’s just like you see in fashion,” she says. “You can see design trends in flooring come back.”
