>> THERE WAS A TIME when Mom and Dad and the kids used to huddle together in the living room in front of the TV, rarely moving from their perch between commercial breaks for fear of missing must-see moments on the tube. A lot has changed since that time. For one thing, old-fashioned cathode ray tubes have been replaced by high-definition liquid crystal and plasma displays, and we’re no longer tied to regularly scheduled programming, thanks to PVRs, DVRs and streaming services.
OUR UNQUENCHABLE THIRST FOR ROUND- THE-CLOCK NEWS AND ENTERTAINMENT HAS ALSO SPURRED A TREND THAT HAS SEEN TV SCREENS POPPING UP IN NEARLY ANY ROOM OR SPACE WE CAN CONCEIVE OF.
Our unquenchable thirst for round-the-clock news and entertainment has also spurred a trend that has seen TV screens popping up in nearly any room or space we can conceive of. Want to catch the morning news while you’re in the shower? No problem, there’s a waterproof screen for that. Cooking dinner in the kitchen but want to watch the game at the same time? Again, no problem, there’s a screen for that, too. “I think a lot of it has to do with how people consume information and entertainment now,” says David Estabrook, co-owner of Inspire Audio Visual, which specializes in home entertainment and smart-home technology. “You can watch whatever you want, whenever you want. With Netflix and all these other platforms, you’re not as tied down to a schedule now. There are screens everywhere in people’s lives. A large part of it now is that these products are available, and while still relatively expensive, they have come down in cost.” Cont’d on page 134 Parade of Homes fall 2018 131
