YEARS AGO, CHOOSING A FRONT DOOR FOR A HOME WAS ALMOST AN AFTERTHOUGHT FOR MOST PEOPLE. THAT’S NO LONGER THE CASE.
Pelland attributes the increase in popularity of fiberglass to its durability and the fact it remains rigid even in extremely cold conditions. It’s also available in an increasing array of colours and wood-grain finishes. Regardless of the type of door you choose, Pelland says it’s important to consider the venting around the door and to choose a good lock set to avoid any unwanted airflow or condensation buildup. Interior doors adorned with glass or wood panels or mounted on sliding barn-door hardware add an extra note of charm to any room. And patio doors are also taking on new looks as decks have become an extension of our interior surroundings. Sliding patio doorways are giving way to French doors and panoramic folding doors. “Even in our climate we’re seeing a lot more people going away from sliding doors for two or four-panel doors,” Orr says. “You are able to open up a room to the outdoors and have a far bigger space to entertain.”
