NETWORK SECURITY — Cont’d from page 141

“You need to know what you are putting in your house and where the weak parts are,” Gerbrandt says. “A way to avoid it is to go through a professional installer. We can put those protocols in place and the products we have access to have a lot more encryption in them and it makes it a lot harder for people to gain access to your home.” David Estabrook, co-owner of Inspire Audio Visual, agrees that using a professional installer will make a home much more secure, but he says there are several things homeowners can do themselves to reduce their chances of being hacked. One of the easiest and best measures is to update the software on your smart-home device to ensure it has the latest security patches. You can choose between devices that can be updated manually using your computer or smartphone or ones that automatically install updates as they become available. “My advice to people would be to look for products that update themselves,” Estabrook says. “The difficult part is that information is not readily available typically. You need to do some research or call somebody like us who deals with this stuff on a daily basis. We typically will steer people in the direction of stuff that is going to be relatively easy to manage.”
