Swan says about 15 per cent of Huntington Homes’ new builds have either a spice kitchen or a butler’s pantry outfitted with countertops, cabinets and sometimes a wine fridge. Used as a prep and staging area, a butler’s pantry is most commonly located in a hallway between a kitchen and formal dining room. Since many homes these days are open concept, and don’t have a formal dining room, a butler’s pantry may be

which is used for prepping food,” Swan says. Cabinetry usually complements the main kitchen since a butler’s pantry is often visible to guests. “We sometimes put a pocket door on a butler’s pantry,” Swan says. “Ninety-five per cent of the time those doors don’t get closed so that’s why they want to finish it in the same style as their kitchen.” Vassallo says a butler’s pantry might also double as a hub for your morning coffee, and it’s a good place to keep a toaster, microwave or other small appliances that can clutter a kitchen. In larger homes and those with bigger families, a butler’s pantry is almost essential, he says. Some homeowners have a more traditional walk-in pantry as well as a butler’s pantry. With a smaller floor plan, the two are incorporated in the same room. “You can’t have it in a place where you’re walking across the house,” Vassallo says. “Functionality is a must.”
