Canadian families have changed dramatically in 80 years, and change has accelerated over the last 20 years, thanks to cultural shifts and advances in technology. Home builders aren’t just keeping pace; they’re staying a few steps ahead of the curve to meet the needs of an increasingly eclectic market. In July, Statistics Canada released 2016 census data that showed one-person households were the majority for the first time, making up 28.2 per cent of the total and inching ahead of the nuclear family. Couples with children made up only 26.5 per cent of all households, and the

proportion of Canadian couples with at least one child fell to an all- time low of 51.1 per cent. In Manitoba it fell to 47.7 per cent. Home builders are providing cozy courtyard homes and other attractive options for singles and small families, but there’s just as much focus on emerging trends.
