For the next few decades, new inventions were all about making life more convenient. Then, the focus turned to improving those inventions. Shortly after the Second World War, the first automatic top-load washing machine replaced the old wringer models. In 1947, the first microwave cooker appeared. Produced by Raytheon — the makers of Patriot missiles — it weighed three times as much as the average refrigerator, and it was almost as big. Today, high-efficiency washing machines are designed to save money, water and energy. And even countertop microwaves are slightly passé. Built-ins and compact microwave drawers that can be installed in an island or under your dual wall ovens are more on trend.
