Soil solutions

Be sure to add some moss or compost to pre-existing gardens.

Creating a new garden in the ground? Ensure you excavate below the top layer of sod and the clay base just below that (also known as the former bed of Lake Winnipeg) so you can add a blend of three-way or four-way soil — soil, peat, manures and maybe sands, depending on the blend — that is primed for growing before building it back up with fresh soil, Hrycyna says. Standard soil is a gardening staple, but she suggests adding some moss or compost to pre-existing gardens. Sea Soil — a byproduct of composting material blended with fish renderings — is also a popular product that supports good growth and, no, it doesn’t smell fishy.
