Think outside the garden box

Growing vegetables at home isn’t always so much about tonight’s salad as it is about next year’s spaghetti sauce. Jarring, canning and freezing are increasingly popular ways to preserve the fruits (and veggies) of your labour. Salsa, canned tomatoes and pickled cukes and beans are among the easiest ways to expand the lifespan of your crops. “And who doesn’t love to give a gift of something that they’ve prepared to a friend or family member?” Hrycyna says. “The ground gave us that gift and then we’re able to gift it to our families and friends.”

Water log

When first planting your garden, ensure the seed- lings are attentive to the moisture in the ground, Hrycyna says. “Too much water will kill something, whereas if you forget about watering it in the early stage, it will be to the demise of your plant.” Once the plants have established their root systems, you can cut back on watering and let the forecast determine which days they’ll need a drink. 
