can jazz up the rooms with paint and wallpaper. Let the kids pick the colour of the wall but not the carpet,” she quipped. There’s a common myth that wall-to-wall carpeting is more problematic for people with allergies, but Janz says that’s not always the case. “With hard surfaces, dust will move around. With carpet, the dust collects and sticks to the yarn in the carpet. It’s actu- ally better,” she says. “The carpet will collect the dust and it stays in the fibre, which can easily be vacuumed out.” The other part of that myth is that carpet is dirty and often perceived as unclean, but Janz says a lot has changed in how carpets are made. “With today’s technology and yarn fibres, a lot of the carpets are very hard to stain. “People are buying for comfort and sound reduction,” Janz says. “In bedrooms, they really like that comfort and plush underfoot.” Before making decisions about carpets for your home, there are several factors to consider. “Lifestyle is a huge one,” Janz says. “If they have kids and pets, they might choose carpet with higher stain-resistant properties. The fibre technology made with recy- cled content is not as porous,” Janz explains, noting that carpets with a pad underlay are available with a water block, ensuring your carpet will last for years to come. Even with the wide array and popularity of hardwood, tile and other types of flooring, carpet remains a popular choice. “We’ve dedicated a large portion of our showroom to carpets,” Janz says. “We still, by volume, do the most sales (of carpet) and we have a large new homes division.” Janz adds that carpeting, when well-maintained and properly cleaned, will last a long time. “Dirt is abrasive. You do need to use a vacuum with a beater bar to get it properly clean,” she says. “For maintenance, it’s important to have it steam-cleaned every 18 to 24 months. That will restore it and bring the twist in the carpet back to life.” 
