FLAX HOME

A surprising number of Canadian entrepreneurs have learned that sweet dreams are made of European stonewashed linen, along with super- soft muslin and silk pillowcases. Six years ago, three friends in Vancouver — Anna Heyd, Oana Papuc and Vivian McCormick — discovered they shared a passion for high-quality linen. So they founded Flax Home ( shopflaxhome.com ) to produce the kind of bedding they wanted in their own homes — ethically produced designer sheets and duvet covers made from luxurious material that gets softer as it ages. They’ve since expanded their product line to include quilts, waffled bath sheets, chic French-linen bathrobes and oversized dish towels so beautiful you won’t want to get them wet. Similarly, Hush ( hush.ca ) founders Lior Oyahon and Aaron Spivak started out in 2017 making weighted blankets, and then branched out to produce mattresses and bed frames, robes, bamboo sheets and silk pillowcases, which help to prevent frizzy hair and morning face wrinkles. Sleep Country Canada was so impressed, it bought a controlling interest in Hush in 2021. This January, it bought another startup that was born in 2017, Silk and Snow ( silkandsnow.com ). Andrew Chow and two partners wanted to make a more eco-friendly mattress-in-a-box, using non-toxic materials and organic cotton covers. From there it was a short leap to making knitted weighted blankets, silk pillowcases and bedding made from muslin, European flax linen and Egyptian cotton. Then they upped the ante with silky sleep masks, luxe bath towels and throws made from alpaca wool imported directly from the Peruvian Andes.
