Designers currently favour a colour palette that includes a lot of greys and mid-browns, and they’re choosing products with interesting tex- ture. Both hardwood and LVT flooring is being sold with a brushed finish or indentations that call to mind the natural grain in a piece of wood. Some are designed to look like restored floors from old ware- houses or lofts. The rustic look of hickory is also popular in hardwood flooring, notes Francine Curtis, general manager of Curtis Carpets on Pembina Highway. And all kinds of hard flooring is coming in larger sizes – either wid- er hardwood planks or larger tiles. The narrow strips of hardwood familiar from mid-century homes are a thing of the past. Today, hard- wood is likely to be sold in five-inch wide strips or wider. And where the old vinyl tiles from the 1960s were sold in nine-inch squares, today’s flooring tiles may come in 12 by 24 inch, 18 by 18 or even 18 by 36 inch tiles.
