>> There’s a lot more to lighting a home than wiring in a few fixtures and adding a few lamps. Lighting is crucial to both the functionality and the appearance of a home, so planning for illumination should take into account a home’s floor plan, window placements and even the lot it sits on. “We start working with the builders before the basement is even dug,” says Adilia Silva, general manager of Total Lighting Sales. Planning for built-in lighting, such as recessed ceiling lights or wall-mounted lights, needs to start at the beginning so that wir- ing is installed appropriately. And selection of fixtures, such as chandeliers, depends on the location of windows, height of ceil- ings, and the materials on floors, walls and countertops.
