When it introduced naturalized wetlands in Royalwood in 2003, the company kickstarted a new era in eco-friendly development. Characterized by native grasses and ponds, wetlands create a natural flood-control system that also helps keep harmful nutrients from seeping into the greater watershed. Another plus: They provide natural weed control and work as a goose deterrent while preserving habitats for other small wildlife. “We basically took the lake system and continued to im prove on them and that’s where we are today,” says Borger. “I believe our lakes are city standard.” Cont’d on page 48
A developer since the 1950s, when it broke ground on the city’s first master-planned com munity, Windsor Park, Ladco was also the first to incorporate man-made lakes, or stormwater retention ponds, in Southdale in the 1960s. (Dur ing the Parade of Homes in 1966, visitors were wowed by lakes stocked with fish.)
