It became obvious just how much more home buyers would be getting for purchas- ing a new home on the city’s doorstep when Ventura began buying lots to build those homes on. “Not only were people paying considerably less for a lot in, say, La Salle, than you would for a comparable lot in the city, but they were getting wider, deeper lots with bigger side yards — and paying significantly lower taxes at the same time,” Comack says.
Turned out, the answer to the dilemma of where to build new communities was located just out- side city limits. “We looked at towns outside the city such as La Salle, Stonewall and Dugald, and realized that liv- ing there would add only a few more minutes to a homeowner’s commute,” Comack says. “Consider- ing how much more they’d be getting for living in one of those areas, it seemed to us that spending a few extra minutes in the car cruising along the highway wouldn’t be that big a deal.”
