CONSTRUCTING A CAREER IN THE HOMEBUILDING INDUSTRY BY JANINE LEGAL

Paul and her colleagues are working to expand the five per cent of the workforce in trades made up of women. Every two years, they host a major confer- ence where everyone comes together to reach a common goal. “I’m just so passionate about making a difference in people’s lives. From seeing young single mothers on assistance to seeing them support their families on their own … It’s life-changing,” she says. “If we want women and under-rep- resented groups, we have to shift the workplace culture so that it’s accepting and inviting for every- body: newcomers, Indigenous, men, women and youth.”

“We don’t recognize the opportuni- ties that trades present,” Paul says. Paul has seen firsthand the benefits of working in the trades. Her four children have all found rewarding and well-paid employ- ment in trades. “They all have their own homes and their own vehicles. Schools are saying you need to go to univer- sity but you’ve only got 30 per cent going to university. This is an opportunity to go to college and have a career. The opportunities are endless. It really gives me peace of mind. They’re self-sufficient at a young age, and they’re confident in the work they do. Their network is incredible,” she explains.

areer paths in the home- building industry are numerous and wide- ranging. Due to a notable shortage of skilled workers in the trades, there’s a push to encourage under-represented groups — like women, Indigenous people and newcomers to Canada — to consider exploring the long list of opportunities in Manitoba. Carol Paul, executive director of the Manitoba Construction Sector Council, is responsible for addressing the human resources needs of the construc- tion industry, whether in roads and bridges, commercial build- ings or home-building.
