N ew home designers earthier and bolder hues — especially when it comes to
“This approach allows for personality without overwhelming the design.” Dramatic veining is another way designers are choosing to inject colour into countertops, creating a strong statement that screams luxury. Veining is a natural pattern, lines or streaks appearing in natural stone or quartz. Again, Kolarz says this works best when the other components of the room — the floors and cabinetry, for example — don’t have competing patterns. Even bathroom countertops, which are typically white stone, are becoming a canvas for experimen- tation, whether that be in the form of pastel hues, darker shades, the aforementioned veining or a splash of suddenly stylish terrazzo. “We’re noticing that designers and homeowners alike are becoming more adventurous in these smaller, more personal spaces,” Swanson continues. “(A bathroom’s) size allows for bold choices without feeling overwhelming.” Along with colours and patterns, there have been some innovative trends in the actual installation of kitchen and bathroom countertops. Blending counters with their back- splashes, for one, creates a sleek, seamless look that’s really taking off, Kolarz says.

are gradually venturing away from grey to embrace
kitchen and bathroom countertops. And why not? Life is too short for bland surfaces. “Countertops are taking on a warmer, more inviting turn,” says Darius Kolarz, marketing and advertising coordinator for Granite Mountain Stone Design. With roots dating back to 1995, the residential and commercial stonework company based in West St. Paul specializes in quartz, natural stone and porcelain surfaces. “Darker shades offer a dramatic contrast and add a touch of luxury to both bathrooms and kitchens,” adds computer-aided design technician Tracy Swanson. “It’s exciting to see how these trends balance warmth and boldness to create truly striking spaces.” While neutral whites, greys and beiges are still tops when it comes to quartz counters, bold colours inspired by the vibrant tones found in natural stone are gaining popu- larity. New builds tend to give these colours a single focal point, such as a kitchen island top, while the rest of the space remains more subdued.
