“Cedar is your premium wood. It’s more expensive and harder to come by right now. It is selective so a lot of retailers won’t stock it; they’ll just order it as needed.” The vinyl fence is an interesting option. “There are a couple of retailers in the city that carry it,” Friesen says. “It’s not something that we carry. It’s not as popular.” Some use PVC vinyl, though, which is more durable but expensive. “There is a new option out there, too — Barrette fence panels. That is a company that’s coming around in a big way. A couple of retailers, including us, carry it. They are six-foot by six-foot sections, so you get these metal posts that can be spiked into the ground or bolted on to concrete. The panels
are vinyl, so you can insert vinyl planks,” Friesen says. “Or you can use these posts
and use wood instead of the vinyl inserts. This lays out the boards horizontally, which is appealing. A lot of people are liking that now instead of that old-fash- ioned vertical. A benefit of these Barrette fences is that you can buy a six-foot section or two six-foot sections and put them on your deck and use them for privacy. You see that in a lot of people’s backyards and decks now. They’ll just put up one panel to allow for some privacy.” Then there are security gates that can go with building your new fence. “Some people like trellises and there would be ways to keep that
open, like an open archway. But people like their privacy, so you can get your regular gate tip, which has four corners, and you just build around it — just a wood, standard gate,” Friesen says. “There’s Nuvo Iron. They sell inserts that you can cut and place in the fence to allow a decorative look, with different designs that you can do. And Nuvo sells iron gates, square or arch-top.” An ornamental fence is made of steel and is available in different styles. A pool fence is also known as a “Protect-A-Child” surround because it protects kids in swim- ming pool areas. A welded wire fence can include meshing. “The most common is obviously the brown-treated wood fence and I would sell that 100-to-1 on anything else,” Friesen says. “Typically, what most residential homes would build would be a six-foot high fence with eight-foot long sections, a top and a bottom rail. That’s what we would price out for the most standard buy.” McMunn and Yates will provide the estimate, the knowledge and the delivery to the site.
