very architecturally unique. And although the lots are slightly smaller, back-lane homes are not smaller homes. “They are still a family home. We have designs that range from 1,400 square feet to just under 1,700 square feet,” he says. “You’re still getting three bedrooms and 2 1/2 baths — you just have the garage in the back. It’s a different lifestyle.” He says the back-lane homes are appealing to anyone who wants to be in a comfortably spacious home but with reduced yard work. That includes busy families who want a bit of yard space for kids, all the way up to the 50-plus demographic who still want a house and some yard for enter- taining but are not yet ready to move into a condominium. The show home Randall Homes has completed is a good example of what a back-lane home looks like and how it would be laid out on the property.

For example, he explains that the show home Randall Homes has built in Sage Creek has a front retaining wall with a wrought iron fence on the top. “It brings a richer look to the home. You still have the steps up to the house. The front yard is very low maintenance. You wouldn’t have a front lawn but instead a nice space for some decorative containers and garden,” he says. He describes the back-lane homes as having a “nice feel” while being

It’s a design idea that’s coming around again to new home builds. “When you take the garage off the front of the house and move it to the back lane, you’re able to add more unique features to the home. An attached garage can dominate the whole façade of the home,” says Jason Jaquet, vice-president of Randall Homes. Jaquet points out that by
