THOUGHTS ON THE ESPRESSO MARTINI COCKTAIL TREND?
Coffee is the world’s favourite drink, so it was only a matter of time before it crossed into nightlife. The espresso martini is the perfect bridge. Just like there are 87,000 ways to order a Starbucks coffee, there are endless ways to play with this cocktail. It’s a great canvas for creativity, and we love that. For us, it’s exciting to see people experimenting and making it their own. DO YOU INFUSE THE VODKA YOURSELF? WHERE DO YOU GET THE BASE SPIRIT FROM? Yes, we do all of our own infusions. Baltic Bros is part of Capital K Distillery, Manitoba’s first craft distillery. Everything we make is produced right here in Manitoba, using 100 per cent Manitoba grain. We bring over four generations of recipes from Poland, but thanks to the fact that Poland and Manitoba sit on the same latitude, we’re able to adapt them perfectly with local ingredients. It’s Manitoba inputs making Polish magic. HOW IS YOUR ESPRESSO MARTINI CRAFT COCKTAIL MADE? We start with our wheat-based vodka and do a 23-hour cold brew infusion with De Luca’s espresso beans, both regular and decaf. At the same time, we make our own in-house coffee liqueur with various international dark roast coffees, cocoa nibs and vanilla. We keep the sweetness to the absolute min- imum, just enough to hit what we call the “bliss point” — that perfect balance where sugar meets coffee bitterness. We bottle it at 20 per cent ABV so that when it’s shaken hard with ice, it lands at around 14 per cent in the glass. Served chilled and foamy in a coupe, it’s smooth, lightly sweet and just caffeinated enough to enjoy all night long. WHAT ARE THE BALTIC BROTHERS’ BEVERAGES OF CHOICE? For cocktails, we love the Man-o-War — bourbon, triple sec, vermouth and lemon juice. It’s like if a Manhattan and a whisky sour had a baby. Beyond that, we get excited trying other slow-made spirits from around the world. Spirits carry history, culture and family stories, and tasting them is like trav- elling through time one drink at a time. If a recipe has lasted generations, you can bet it’s worth raising a glass to.
