For example, if a child's new bedroom doesn't have space for both a desk and a dresser, a closet system with drawers presents a tidy solution. An expert can help to design a system with the right products to maximize efficiency in every space. "People get confused or they don't know what to do, they might look in the pantry and think, 'Wow, what am I going to do with this?' "They wouldn't know because they just don't have the background, but we can design it on the computer right there for you specifically." • Consider storage where it is most needed. The mudroom is a good place to start as it will immediately add value to the home. In addition to a closet system, use hooks to keep things like backpacks off the floor. Establish spaces for each item of clothing and for each family member. • Organize on a continuous basis, as we all accumulate items over the year. Develop a habit of putting things away when you're done using them. A system makes that easy. • Ask yourself if you really need new items before you shop. • Add a closet doubler, especially useful in an older home or children's rooms. • Hang clothing with the fronts facing you. Hangers should face the same way, too (think of it like a question mark). It looks better and it's easier to see each item. • Grouping items by colour helps to make sense of your outfits — and it's easier on the eyes. • Every five years, pretend you are moving. Proceed through your house as if it were going to be sold and declutter. Your systems are far more efficient when they aren't overloaded.
