10 MANITOBA CAMPING ASSOCIATION MAY 16, 2019 A group of campers at Camp Wasaga in the late the 1990s. Submitted photo By Noah Erenberg A s a kid, I never went to summer camp. My wife, on the other hand, was a camp enthusiast. So, when we started our family nearly 30 years ago, we were grateful to discover a place where all of us could enjoy the summer camp experience. Camp Wasaga at Riding Mountain National Park was something we never knew existed: a family camp where kids are engaged in age- appropriate programming while parents can either participate in organized adult activities or just do their own thing. Wasaga's comfortable atmosphere came with spacious cabins, communal dining and rec halls, volleyball court, waterfront dock and all the kayaks and canoes one could hope for. But this was more than just a beautiful concept in an ideal setting with fun-loving staff and down-to-earth families. It was a true community where over the next 25 years my wife and I would marvel at how we and our three kids formed deep bonds with our Camp Wasaga "family," enthusiastically renewing these special ties every summer at family camp, or while volunteering each spring to help open up camp at the May long work-weekend, or while celebrating the spirit of giving at the annual fall supper. Now that our kids are grown, we still return to camp because it reminds us of the importance of community. What we discovered at Camp Wasaga was a caring, sharing and compassionate home where children and adults feel safe; it was, and still is, the village it takes to raise a child. ● Why let your kids have all the fun?
Camp Wasaga is Manitoba's only summer camp for the entire family. We call it Family Camp!
