That 751-yard, par 6 17th test may have been surpassed elsewhere, but that very same La Broquerie layout has a new distinction. It has been hosting the first foot golf course in Manitoba for the past three years. Foot golf? No, it's not about how adeptly you can kick your ball out from behind a tree when no one is looking. In fact, you use a soccer ball, not that little, dimpled sphere with a mind of its own. Foot golf is a hybrid sport that combines soccer with golf. Players kick the ball down the fairway and putt it into a 21-inch diameter cup in as few shots as possible. "We introduced it three seasons ago," says Darren Dundas, managing co-partner of the golf course. "We had the only foot golf course west of Toronto and east of Alberta, but a course in Thunder Bay has since introduced it. "That first year, we did really well with it. The numbers have gone down since but those numbers are steady now." The foot golf tee boxes are set up in the rough and its 18 holes are played within the front nine of the La Vérendrye golf course. "They are a completely separate entity from the golf course," Dundas says. "None of the holes are located close to the golf greens. We did it for the extra revenue and a lot of teams come out to play." It costs $18 per adult to play 18 holes of foot golf. La Vérendrye restricts it to every afternoon but Tuesdays, starting at 2 p.m., because the course is so busy with golf in the mornings. It takes about 90 minutes to two hours to play. School and team groups can get a special rate. "Anybody from four years old to 90 can play, you just need the ability to kick the ball," Dundas says. "Some people just do it for exercise. I've seen guys play it in 45 minutes but they're jogging the whole time. "We don't allow soccer cleats because they tear up the turf and carts would be a hindrance to them. We also recommend that they bring their own (soccer) balls." The course, however, does rent soccer balls. "The only problem we had at the very beginning was that the golfers complained about the noise when a soccer player would cheer when he got the ball in the hole," Dundas says. "But I told them that golfers cheer, too, when they chip in from 100 yards out." Foot golf apparently originated in Spain but was established in the Netherlands in 2008. "Foot golf in Europe is becoming a very big sport," Dundas says. "There are some big tournaments in Canada, but it hasn't taken off as well as it has there." According to the Canadian Foot Golf Association, there are currently 37 courses operating across Canada. The Federation for International Foot Golf (FIFG) is comprised of 20 associations around the world and the third Foot Golf World Cup was held in Morocco last year. Dundas is hoping more courses will spring up in Manitoba. "We'd love for someone to open up another one so we could have competitions with them. I've had a couple of courses call about it, but they haven't done it so far." Meanwhile, La Vérendrye still has the longest hole in Manitoba, which was a drawing card when it was first designed in 1988. "But there's not as many now because few people play the hole from the tips because it's very difficult to play from the tips, especially if it's windy," Dundas says. "A lot of people have eagled (two-under par) it because it is a par 6. There's been a few albatrosses (three under). Playing from the whites, it's easily parred." Gil Dube bought the course from the founding family 25 years ago and Dundas is going into his 15th season as his partner, While the area is dotted with popular golf courses, La Vérendrye is holding its own, although Dundas declined to estimate the number of golfers who play it each season. He also declined to disclose the number of memberships it usually sells. "Just tell them that we have the best value for golf in southeast Manitoba," he says. And the best for foot golf.
