J eff Stoneham, founder and owner of Jeff Stone- ham's Creative Planters, has made a name for himself designing and selling vibrant succulent arrangements that come in a variety of eye- catching planters. Over the years, Stoneham's product line has grown to include his trademark O.M.G. Planters — which come in multicoloured letter-shaped boxes — his Message on a Bottle arrangements, which come in hand-decorated, chalkboard-painted recycled bottles, and his Tree-mendous groupings, which come in rus- tic, repurposed wooden logs. More recently, he's added animal-shaped planters to his repertoire, offering everything from dogs to dolphins to elephants, many of them festooned with decorative butterflies and birds. Stoneham says he was first drawn to succulents be- cause of the range of colours and varieties available, and soon grew to enjoy working with them — and finding unique, creative containers in which to pres- ent his handiwork. "I don't think that I find it relaxing," Stoneham says of his vocation via email. "But I enjoy all the different colours succulents can come in, and really like seeing how happy people are when they get their products." Now 27, Stoneham grew up in the St. James neigh- bourhood of Winnipeg, where he enjoyed collecting Yugioh cards and playing soccer and video games with friends. He admits he wasn't particularly interested in gar- dening as a young man, though he proved a quick study once Beaujesour's Supported Employment Op- tions (SEO) agency — which provides assistance to adults facing intellectual, social and physical barriers to employment — helped him get his business off the ground four years ago. With help from SEO staff, Stoneham learned to paint the containers and prep them for planting, and to pick out succulents with complementary sizes, shapes and colour schemes. (Like the decorative birds and b u t t e r f l i e s , the succulents themselves are arti- ficial, meaning they re- quire no maintenance and can be displayed vertically for heightened impact.) Judging from the feedback on his Facebook page — not to mention all the "Sold" stamps over many of the photos — Stoneham's work has proven popular, both in Beaujesour and throughout the province. Earlier this year, he earned the most votes in the Seasoned Entrepreneur category of the prairie-wide Just Watch Me! competition, a Community Futures- sponsored initiative celebrating business owners with health conditions or disabilities. The prize package included $1,000 and a mar- keting toolkit that's helped him increase his public profile — a welcome assist, given Stoneham has in the past had difficulties with public speaking, or even engaging in one-on-one conversations. "In both my day-to-day life and [while] running my business, I can struggle interacting with people that I do not know," Stoneham says, adding his confidence has increased as a result of running his business. "Since I am a shy person, it can be challenging for me to interact with customers … I am more comfort- able with those that I already know." Stoneham says other challenging aspects of run- ning a business include keeping pace with demand and finding time to complete orders, noting a par- ticularly important piece of advice he received early on was to "take things slow, and don't put too much on your plate." His advice for first-time entrepreneurs is simple: "Do something that you love, and never give up." His planters are also available at The Forks Trading Company in Winnipeg, and Pennyweight Market in Beausejour.
