S h o p p i n g 8 Serious about shopping what's in STORE Hot Buys and Cool Bargains In the city of Winnipeg, shopping has long reigned supreme — from the flagship Hudson Bay Company store downtown to the newly-opened Swedish furniture behemoth Ikea. The Forks Market (theforks.com) is a prime spot for sourcing gifts and goodies from all points on the globe (not surprising, given its origins as one of the province's top trading posts), as are the shops in nearby Johnston Terminal, where you can find everything from candles to kites to traditional Aboriginal art. Looking for one-of-a-kind values and gotta-have-it gift ideas? Head to urban oasis Osborne Village (osbornevillage.com), where the bohemian artists' vibe inspires handmade jewelry, nifty knick-knacks and first-rate fashions from local designers; to the Corydon and Academy strips (corydonbiz.com and academyroadbiz.com) for designer duds and dazzling accessories; or to the historic Exchange District downtown (exchangedistrict.org), where you can check out eclectic art galleries, funky thrift shops and high-end haberdasheries. Ring Up a Winner Elsewhere in Manitoba, shopping is similarly esteemed — witness Gimli's H.P. Tergesen & Sons (interlaketourism.com), the oldest family-run shop in all of Western Canada. The beachside general store does big business all summer long, but is especially busy in August when crowds of revelers descend for Islendingadagurinn, the town's Icelandic fest. In Brandon, you'll find everything from eco-friendly outdoor gear to homespun Western wear (brandontourism.com), and at Churchill's Arctic Trading Company (arctictradingco.com), you can score customized mukluks, soapstone carvings and caribou hair sculptures. Everyone loves a little retail therapy, and with summer on the way, it's the perfect time to hit the shops. Work some wardrobe magic at chic boutiques and vintage vendors, trawl for handmade treasures at folksy farmers' markets and craft sales, or stock up on gifts and souvenirs at trendy galleries and big-box meccas. The Forks Market The St. Norbert Farmers' Market (stnorbertfarmersmarket.ca) is a great place to pick up handmade wares and artisan crafts (not to mention fresh produce and preserves, baked goods and grain-fed beef ), Stonewall's Global Village Artifacts & Accents stocks pieces by independent artisans from all over the world, and Poor Michael's Bookstore in Onanole (poormichaelsbooks.ca) is the perfect place to catch up on your summer reading, whether you're looking for a long-cherished classic or something breezy for the beach.
