He was far from the only influential Manitoban to leave his mark on the province and, indeed, the entire country. There was also Nellie McClung, whose activism led to Manitoba becoming the first province to grant women the right to vote in provincial elections; spymaster Sir William Stephenson, who was the inspiration for James Bond; writers Carol Shields, Margaret Laurence, Miriam Toews and Gabrielle Roy; world-renowned musicians such as Neil Young, Burton Cummings and Randy Bachman of the Guess Who, Chantal Kreviazuk, the Crash Test Dummies and the Watchmen; Bobby Hull, who became the world's first million- dollar hockey player here; Clara Hughes, the only Olympian to win multiple medals in both the Summer (cycling) and Winter (speed skating) Games; and A.A. Milne's Winnie-the-Pooh was inspired by a black bear named Winnie who was named after our capital city. And every parent with a microwave has Paul Faraci to thank for inventing Pizza Pops in Winnipeg in 1964. All this history has Stuart Murray excited. Murray is Co-Chair of Manitoba 150, the not- for-profit, non-partisan, volunteer-driven host committee overseeing a wide-ranging celebration of all things Manitoba. The plan is to celebrate throughout the entire year starting 150 days before Manitoba Day of our anniversary year. The festivities kick off on Dec. 14 with an event called Illuminate 150 where 300,000 lights will be switched on at the Manitoba Legisla- ture followed by a unique performance by X Games athletes doing flips and turns on snowmobiles.
