Dumbbells and weight plates cost $1.80 per pound, while a functional trainer starts at about $1,500, Fisette says, adding the company isn't taking advantage of the surge in demand by boosting prices. "We've kind of taken the opposite approach," he says. "If my cost hasn't gone up, I don't feel like the retail price should really go up." The type of equipment customers are seeking often depends on the space they have at home. Fisette says people have been getting creative, turning spare bedrooms, laundry rooms, basement space and even a bay in their garage into a personal fitness centre. He has a well-equipped home gym in his own basement, which he even uses while his infant daughter is playing nearby in her activity chair. Carson recommends outfitting a home gym with at least one strength and one cardio piece, but he adds that two cardio pieces are better than one, offering more variety for workouts. Treadmills and spin bikes are popular, as are recumbent bikes that older people may find more comfortable to use.
