In 2019, The Winnipeg Foundation launched Walking Together Grants to support youth-led truth and reconciliation projects. A Youth Advisory Council oversaw the successful three-year pilot program, which approved 17 grants totalling $133,578. These grants helped create opportunities for Winnipeg's Indigenous and non-Indigenous youth to learn and connect. For details on this granting program, please visit wpgfdn.org/walkingtogether 2021 RECIPIENTS We are excited to announce the 2021 Walking Together Grant recipients, which were decided earlier in June! Youth, working with the following organizations, will implement the following projects. Graffiti Art Programming These Shoes Are Made for Walking Together will provide 40 Indigenous youth a pair of sneakers to design with an Indigenous artist. Pembina Trails School Division Engage non-Indigenous students with Indigenous ways of being and support Indigenous students re-connecting with their culture. Prairie to Pine Regional Council - The United Church of Canada Build a medicine garden, educate youth about traditional medicines, participate in a community-led walk, and organize a youth art workshop led by a local Indigenous artist. Start2Finish Canada The "Voices" Reading Circle gives voice to Indigenous authors and promotes Indigenous literacy as an approach to decolonization for Indigenous and non-Indigenous youth. The Seven Oaks School Division Monthly Indigenous Cultural Education gatherings for students at Blue Thunderbird Land-based Learning Centre. Winnipeg Aboriginal Sport and Recreation Association (WASAC) Indigenous youth will receive cultural teachings including basic survival skills to protect and live on their homelands at Two Wolves Anishiative Camp for Youth.
